Mother Nature is once again fickle – we had a 24-hour thaw and some drizzle Tuesday. The thaw took some snow away and iced up the trails. We are currently assessing conditions and we should be able to work up some trails back to a loose surface. There is a distinct possibility for snow Friday. Trails are open but may be icy. Bare spots have developed and there are still thin spots, bumps and dips so use caution. The lakes may have some slushy cover and will be hard glare ice in places. Again, use caution!
You can access the trails from all In-Town parking areas and from Oquossoc. All Rangeley and Oquossoc businesses are open.
Cautions on the Rangeley Trail System:
- ITS 84 at South Bog Stream has a logging operation on the trail. There is a marked temporary by-pass trail along the plowed road. Stay over and be alert and very cautious of vehicles (they have the Right-of-Way).
- ITS 89 heading past Gull Pond. Logging vehicles crossing the trail.
- Greeley Trail – (Connects with ITS 89) Shared use of the trail with logging operations for about one mile.
- Samoset Trail. We need more snow to pack it but you should be able to get through.
Bemis Club Trail – (Connects the Mooselookmeguntic area to ITS 84 south of Oquossoc) Too little snow to pack/groom. - Trails that are limited (may be ungroomed and thin to vert thin) elsewhere ( as of January 22, 2012). Check their web sites.
Corridor 117 to points south. (Slippery Sliders SC)
- Trails into Eustis and Stratton (maintained by the Arnold Trails SC) may be open to food and gas but may be very rough. Check their web site. (Arnold Trail SC).
- ITS 84 and ITS 89 to points south (Phillips & Madrid) may not be open. (North Franklin SC).
- Trails from Eustis to Jackman, Colburn Gore and the Forks, remain limited. (Arnold Trail SC).
Maps are available at local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce
NOTICES
Lake riding is never safe! If you are not experienced and comfortable with riding on lakes. Don’t do it! The Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club has no trails on any lakes, ponds, rivers or streams.
Trail Change Notices
- ITS 84 has been rerouted again this year between Tim Pond Road and Camp 14. This is a longer trip (apx 9 miles one-way) to Bosebuck Mt. Camps and NH.
- The Arnold Trails SC will be grooming a connection just north of Kennebago Lake between ITS 84 and its Tim Pond Road Trail (ITS 89). This allows a scenic loop between Rangeley, East Kennebago Mt. and Oquossoc and a new route into Stratton and Eustis and points east.
- New Trail – Barn Trail. This trail runs between the Russell Cove Trail near the Airport, passed by the RLSC Groomer Barn (portable toilet there) and ends northwest of Loon Lake on the Cedar Swamp Trail. It is the shortest way between Rangeley Village and East Kennebago Mountain.
