Smelts

By Kirby Holcombe “They came in an immense army, actually filling the streams here and there with a dense, struggling mass, which the natives captured by the bushel and by the barrel in nets, buckets, and pails.” This passage is from “CARRIE STEVENS” by Graydon and Leslie Hilyard, 2000. Sounds like a description of a smelt run, but these were blue -back trout in the early 1800’s. The blue- back trout was a favorite food of the brook trout in the Rangeley Lakes, and many feel they were the reason for the immense brook trout in our region.
